Puerto Vallarta's Westin and Marriott resorts have revalidated their Blue Flag distinctions for the 2024-2025 season, after having obtained them for the first time last year. With these two new certifications, Puerto Vallarta has a total of three Blue Flag distinctions, all through hotels, including the Sheraton Buganvilias. However, the other beaches certified in the past have lost this recognition due to the lack of actions by the municipal government.
Both hotels have reaffirmed their commitment to sustainability and cleaning of its beaches, fundamental aspects to receive this distinction. The international organization Blue Flag, present in 51 countries, grants this certification to beaches and marinas that meet high standards in water quality, management and environmental education. In addition, it recognizes the sustainable practices of the establishments, such as sea turtle conservation programs and educational activities they carry out in the community.
The Blue Flag award is granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), and is an international recognition that certifies beaches and marinas for their excellence in environmental management, safety and services. In 2018, Puerto Vallarta had 8 Blue Flags, but the lack of continuity in municipal efforts has reduced that number to the current situation.
